The City of North Vancouver maintains close links with the North Vancouver Recreation Commission, the North Vancouver City Library and the many agencies and organizations providing service to children and families within their boundaries.  Their active Social Planning Department supports the provision of child care facilties 0-12 through zoning and licensing proposals.

Family Services of the North Shore

Family Services of the North Shore is a not-for-profit agency providing counselling and parent/caregiver education and support programs across the North Shore.  

Family Services of the North Shore also provides parent and child drop-in programs at the I hope family centre on West 1st Street and at Maplewood Farm.  Family Support Counsellors and Parent Educators are in attendance at some StrongStart drop-in programs.  Call the main agency number for further information.

John Braithwaite Community Centre (JBCC)

John Braithwaite Community Centre (JBCC), in partnership with North Shore Neighbourhood House provides a wide range of programs to support families, children and youth in the Lower Londsdale area.  The Family Resource Centre includes a Parent Child Mother Goose program, several drop-in programs for children 0-6 years of age, breast feeding support, a parent education series, young parent baby drop-in, post partum support, story time with the city librarian, a Fathers program and a program for Grandparents.

Family Host Program

Become a Parent Volunteer with the North Shore Multicultural Society’s Host Program. We are looking for families who are interested in volunteering 2 hours per week to help a new family settle in on the North Shore. Volunteering time is flexible and can be combined with your regular activities. Northvanrec is committed to welcoming newcomers to the North Shore by providing translated information and services.  We invite you to learn more about our recreation, fitness, and art and culture opportunities by participating in the following translated programs and services:

Community Recreation Centre Volunteer Hosts

Visit the Volunteer Hosts at Harry Jerome Recreation Centre who welcome and assist individuals in four languagues – Farsi, Korean, Mandarin and English.  Out hosts are available at the follwoing days and times:

  • Farsi               Thursdays 9:15-12:00
  • Korean           Wednesdays 10:00-12:00
  • Mandarin      Thursdays 9:15-11:15

Community Recreation Centre orientation Tours

Groups can book a translated facility tour with our Volunteer Hosts at Harry Jerome Recreation Centre.  The tour includes a pool, arena, weight room, art space, fitness classes, indoor cycling and gymnasium visit.  Please contact our Volunteer Resource Programmer,  Meh Najak, at (604) 983-6417 to book a tour with our Volunteer Hosts.

Translated Multi-Language Guides

If English is not your first language, we have an Easy Guide available in eight different languages:  Farsi, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Japanese, Tagalog, French, Spanish and Russian.  Printed copies of the Easy Guides are available for you to pick up at your local Recreation and Community Centre or by visiting our website www.northvanrec.com  (See publications and Resources/Leisure Guides).

Queen Mary and Westview Community School Program

Queen Mary and Westview  Community School program meets the social and recreational needs of children and families of Queen Mary and Westview schools. 

The Community Project Coordinator organizes in-school and after-school programs in partnership with the John Braithwaite Community Centre, North Vancouver Community Arts Council and many others.  Activities include soccer, dance, science, art classes and much more.

Parents are invited to enjoy coffee mornings, parent luncheons, parenting classes, active adventures and other fun stuff.  Come meet other parents from the school and community.
